Conditions We Treat

  • Back and neck pain is when you feel soreness, discomfort, or aching in your back or neck. This can happen for many reasons, like sitting too long, lifting something heavy, or sleeping in a bad position. It’s a common issue and can make it hard to move around comfortably.

  • Spinal stenosis is a condition where the spaces in your spine canal narrows, putting pressure on your spinal cord or nerves. Think of it like a tunnel getting squeezed, which can cause pain, numbness, or weakness in your back, legs, or arms. It often happens as you get older and can make it harder to move around comfortably.

  • A herniated disc happens when one of the soft, gel-like cushions between the bones in your spine (called discs) that tears and/or gets pushed out of place. It's like a jelly doughnut where the filling squeezes out. This can press on nearby nerves and cause pain, numbness, or weakness in your back, legs, or arms.

  • Myelopathy is a term used to describe a problem with the spinal cord that causes symptoms like weakness, numbness, or difficulty with movement. It often happens when something puts pressure on the spinal cord, like a herniated disc or arthritis. Essentially, it’s when the spinal cord gets squeezed or irritated, leading to issues with how your body feels and moves.

  • Degenerative disc disease is when the cushions between the bones in your spine, called discs, start to wear out over time. These discs act like shock absorbers, so when they break down, you might feel pain or stiffness in your back or neck. It’s a bit like the padding in a chair wearing thin, making the chair less comfortable.

  • Sciatica is a type of pain that travels down the sciatic nerve, which runs from your lower back through your hips and buttocks and down each leg. It usually happens when the nerve is irritated or compressed, often due to a herniated disc or spinal stenosis. This can cause pain, numbness, or weakness in your lower back, buttocks, and legs. The discomfort can range from mild to severe and might only affect one side of your body.

  • Radiculopathy is a condition where a nerve in your spine gets pinched or irritated. This can cause pain, tingling, or weakness that travels from your back or neck down into your arms or legs. Imagine a nerve getting squeezed like a garden hose, leading to problems in the areas the nerve controls.

  • Spondylolisthesis is a condition where one of the bones in your spine (vertebra) slips out of its normal position and moves forward over the vertebra below it. This can cause lower back pain, stiffness, and sometimes nerve irritation or pressure, leading to pain or numbness that might radiate into the legs. It can happen due to various reasons, including injury, degeneration, or a congenital condition.

I had been to Emergency Rooms and other surgery and pain clinics over a fifteen year period. Two people I know had seen Dr. Meirelles and said I should see him. I went to my visit with him and felt he was the most professional doctor I had ever seen. We laid out a plan of treatment based on several tests and was able to treat the pain initially with injections. After two treatments we decided surgery was the best option.
